Largest youth hockey tournament in Europe, Gazprom Neft Cup, will be held in Omsk

Gazprom Neft CupLargest youth hockey tournament in Europe, Gazprom Neft Cup, will be held in Omsk The Gazprom Neft Cup, the international youth hockey tournament of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), will be held in Omsk for the seventh time from April 25-28, 2013. The children of 16 youth hockey schools from Russian and foreign clubs will take part in the competition. Following the established tradition, the Gazprom Neft Cup games will be held on Omsk’s two central ice arenas: the Avangard hockey center and the Omsk Arena, the largest ice sports arena east of the Urals, which seats over 10,000 spectators. The name of the winning team is inscribed on the Cup. Then the winning team keeps the Cup until the next tournament. The Gazprom Neft Cup was created by the same artists who created the Gagarin Cup. The winner of the 2012 tournament was the Kazan team Ak Bars.

Over the past seven years, it has transformed from a regional competition into the largest youth hockey tournament in Europe. The project’s constant progress is confirmed not only in the high level of organization and the level of the players’ skills, but through significant growth of the number of participants as well. This year, 21 applications were submitted for 16 spots. Upon completion of the tournament, we will decide together with the KHL what needs to be done in order to increase the number of participants. It is possible that we will convert to holding the tournament in two cities, one in the East and one in the West, with a large four-team super-final at the end,” noted Tournament Organizational Committee Chairman and Member of the Gazprom Neft Management Board Alexander Dybal..
