As the Gazprom Neft Cup is prepared for the 2015 tournament, CSKA are presented with a copy of the trophy

As the Gazprom Neft Cup is prepared for the 2015 tournament, 2014 winners CSKA are presented with their own copy.

With just under a month to go until the IX International Gazprom Neft Cup KHL Kids’ Hockey Tournament, the CSKA Olympic Reserve School for Children and Youth was recently host to a traditional tournament ceremony, with last year’s winners (already two-time champions) receiving their own miniature copy of the prestigious trophy, to keep forever.

As is the case for the Jules Rimet trophy (the World Cup), the Davis Cup (tennis) and the Gagarin Cup (presented to the winner of the KHL playoffs), there is only one model of the 14-kilogramme Gazprom Neft Cup. Consistent with tournament regulations, the winning team keeps the trophy until the next tournament. The Gazprom Neft Cup has now been on display at the school’s museum for almost two years — CSKA’s young hockey players having won Europe’s most significant youth hockey tournament two years running, in 2013 and 2014.

Today, the Cup was returned to members of tournament organising committee. In return, Director of the CSKA youth academy Alexey Deev received a copy of the trophy, to be kept forever and which was immediately given pride of place in the museum attached to the country’s most celebrated hockey club.

Organising Committee Executive Director Anna Kazarina commented: “As a major element of the Tournament, the Cup will be sent to be made ready for the forthcoming events, with craftsmen cleaning and re-polishing what is the main trophy of the Tournament. St Petersburg will have the opportunity to see the trophy during the opening ceremony of the Tournament on 25 April, after which it will be transferred to Omsk where, on 29 April, following the Superfinal, it will be handed to the winner of the Gazprom Neft Cup.”
