St Petersburg’s Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) team SKA has won the sport’s most prestigious trophy — the Gagarin Cup. Despite stubborn opposition from Kazan’s AK Bars, SKA (one of the most famous of the country’s army sports clubs) ended the series 4:1, with the final match ending in a conclusive victory for the red-and-blues, at 6:1.
The organisers of the Gazprom Neft Cup are proud to congratulate the SKA players, coaching staff and management. Demonstrating excellent play, sporting prowess and outstanding technical skill, SKA have taken their rightful place as the leading team in the Kontinental Hockey League, as well as bringing a coveted sports trophy back to St Petersburg. It was particularly pleasing to see West Group Tournament Ambassador and captain (with a capital “C”) Ilya Kovalchuk be the first to raise the Cup. There can be no doubt that this sparkling and fascinating final series will inspire junior players in the Gazprom Neft Cup to train even harder to achieve the same level of sportsmanship as these. Again, we congratulate everyone involved.
