In Omsk, the semi-final games in the East Group of the 9th Gazprom Neft Cup have finished up. The tournament hosts again left their opponents no chances and are now in a battle for a place in the Super Final against one of their long-standing rivals, Metallurg from Magnitogorsk.
In the semi-final, the ‘hawks’ fought the strong-willed and tenacious Neftekhimik. In this tournament, the squad from Nizhnekamsk, with their solid defence, have spoiled the party for a lot of opponents, but in this game they were beaten by their own weapon. Avangard quickly scored two goals and then launched a counter attack game. The Nizhnekamsk team got a lot of penalties, although even in the majority they couldn’t fend off the speed of the Omsk forwards. As a result, Neftekhimik allowed three goals, though they had more players on the ice than the other team — an unforgiveable waste of opportunities in the semi-final! Team discipline and successful realization of goal chances brought Avangard their victory of 7:1.
In a concurrent game for the other spot in the East Group’s final, Kazan team Ak Bars played Metallurg (Magnitogorsk). This game was a meeting of two equal teams, and for a long time no one could gain the advantage and break out a score. Both teams were vying for victory, but in the end the “magnets” beat the “leopards” with a score of 4:3, and now the group’s final looks set to be a classic of Russian hockey — Avangard versus Magnitogorsk Metallurg!
The winner will earn a place in the Tournament Super Final, playing the best team from the West Group for the main tournament trophy — the Gazprom Neft Cup.
The East Group’s final will start at 18:30 Omsk time (15:30 Moscow time), and will be broadcast live on KHL TV, as well as on the official website of the Gazprom Neft Cup. Don’t miss it!
