With one month to go to the 10th Gazprom Neft Cup (the KHL international kids’ hockey tournament), the traditional handover of the tournament trophy has taken place at the Dynamo Chernyshev Sports School. Traditionally, winners receive a miniature copy of the Cup, which they are allowed to keep in perpetuity. The name of the 2015 winning team is then engraved by master jewellers on a special panel on the original trophy.
The Cup changes hands, from one academy to another, but remains in Moscow. For two consecutive years the
Dynamo Sports School Director Mikhail Titov commented: “This Cup as important to us as any prize from a professional tournament. Dynamo attaches considerable importance to youth hockey, and we realise we are following a tradition here: from a young age the guys learn how to overcome difficulties, how to work in a team, how to help one another, and how to take responsibility for themselves. Any success is important, but we’re talking here about winning the international Gazprom Neft Cup, where the competition gets tougher every year!”
Organising Committee Executive Director Anna Kazarina added: “Handing over the miniature copies of the Gazprom Neft Cup to winning teams has, already, become a very pleasant part of our tradition. It acts as a sort of cut-off point — marking the final stage of every participant’s training for the next tournament. And this time, of course, the pressure’s even greater — what lies ahead are the 10th anniversary matches, taking place in the Olympic city of Sochi.”
The Gazprom Neft Cup is produced by the same master craftsmen behind the Gagarin Cup (the senior trophy for the Kontinental Hockey League). April 2016 will see this coveted trophy cleaned and polished, before appearing at the Opening Ceremony of the 10th Anniversary tournament of the Gazprom Neft Cup on the 20th and subsequently put on display at the Arena Omsk for the SuperFinal on the 24th, where it will be awarded as the main trophy to the winners of the tournament.
