The East Group quarterfinalists are confirmed!

21 April 2016, 11:56 (msc)

Today in East Group the line-up for the quarter finals was confirmed, as well as the participants of the consolation round.

In the first game, Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk thrashed Amur Khabarovsk 8:3 and emphatically clinched top spot in Group B. The team had a perfect record, collecting six points and a goal difference of +11 (16-5!). In Group A, things weren’t so clear cut. Ak Bars Kazan defeated Ugra Khanty-Mansiysk on day one but then suffered a heavy defeat against Avangard Omsk and had a −3 goal difference as it waited anxiously for the result of Ugra — Avangard game to decide its fate. Ugra, which needed a regulation-time win to make it to the next round, led 3:1 but the ‘hawks’ tied the game... and with just one minute left to the final siren ‘mammoths’ of Khanty-Mansiysk scored the winning goal to send Ak Bars out of the competition.

At the same time the excitement in the Avangard hockey centre was also coming to the boil. Metallurg Novokuznetsk shocked tournament favourite Traktor Chelyabinsk with a 2:0 victory that clinched second place in Group D ahead of Metallurg Magnitogorsk. Now the team from Novokuznetsk will face Avangard Omsk, even though up until the final game almost everyone had assumed that Metallurg Magnitogorsk would progress. In Group C, Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg and Salavat Yulaev Ufa eased into the top two places, sending Sibir Novosibirsk to the consolation round.

And so today sees the quarterfinals of the 10th Gazprom Neft Cup, East Group. Don’t forget you can see the games from Omsk Arena live on our website.
