The Nenets and Khanty people work as walking inspectors and monitor the condition of pipelines. Every year, the Company allocates money to provide medical services to ethnic communities, support education in secondary schools and higher education institutions, and purchase fuels, lubricants, food, special clothes, vehicles, and building materials. In 2010, the financial support allocated to each indigenous family amounted on average to 342,000 roubles.
Social programs developed by Gazprom Neft and its subsidiaries to support the region’s indigenous people are a matter of regular discussion with the heads of ethnic communities. The Company endeavours to help preserve the cultural heritage of peoples of the North. For example each year the Company sponsors the Reindeer Herders Festival, one of the biggest events of the year for the Nenets who live in the polar regions of northeastern Europe and northwestern Siberia.
