Gazprom Neft specialists recently led a role-play session, «In-company knowledge management» for the specialist-faculty masters’ degree students and tutors at Tyumen Industrial University (TIU), with specialists from Gazprom Neft’s Capital Construction function, together with young professionals from company subsidiaries including Messoyakhaneftegaz, Gazpromneft-Razvitiye, Gazpromneft-Yamal and the Gazprom Neft Science and Technology Centre, taking part alongside TIU students and lecturers.
The task facing the teams, made up of students, lecturers and oil-industry professionals, and covering the various functions fulfilled in a typical vertically integrated oil company, was becoming a global technological leader in developing hard-to-recover reserves in Arctic oilfields. In order to achieve this goal role-play participants also had to make proactive use of a knowledge management system built around a similar model to that used at Gazprom Neft.
Sergey Kartavy, Development Director for Capital Construction at the Gazprom Neft Science and Technology Centre, commented:
«The important thing students needed to understand in this game is how important it is to share knowledge with colleagues. This is the only way to achieve an outstanding team outcome. Putting together an integrated team of masters students, higher-education teachers, young specialists and tutors — experts from Gazprom Neft — is one of the most important areas of our work in improving employee skills in capital construction. Employees and students — even at this stage — need to think alike, exist in the same information space, and have common goals, thinking and operating in the same way.»
A further step in creating an integrated team of TIU masters’ students and their tutors — Gazprom Neft employees — will be an «early acquaintance» programme, with tutors now not just signing off qualifying course work, but also guiding students and supporting their work to that end.
Alexander Korkishko, Head of the Gazprom Neft specialist faculty at the TIU Construction Institute, commented:
«Gazprom Neft specialists are not just committed to passing on their knowledge to students in the specialist faculty, but also to actively engaging students and lecturers as part of the company team. On which basis, we are continually fine-tuning the education programme, and adjusting curricula. This approach helps future graduates adapt to work more readily, and become part of their new team.»

The Gazprom Neft specialist faculty at Tyumen Industrial University is now in its fourth year of operation — its objective being to train qualified personnel for the Capital Construction function. Part of the learning process involves specialists from Gazprom Neft’s Science and Technology Centre, Major Projects division and existing assets in delivering lectures for master’s students as well as practical assignments as part of regular communications sessions. Secondments at Gazprom Neft businesses are arranged for faculty students.
