The Gazprom Neft Moscow Refinery marked its 80th birthday in 2018. It continues changing and growing in line with the city, however, modernising its production facilities and implementing cutting-edge technologies in order to support the capital’s economic growth. The Moscow Refinery today means fuel for every third car in the capital, and for every seventh plane leaving the city’s airports. Gazprom Neft’s investment in modernising the refinery now stands at RUB250 billion, making it the most investment-intensive project in the city’s industry. Thanks to this modernisation initiative the plant was able to transfer to the full production of modern Euro-5 fuels in 2013 – three years ahead of the regulatory deadline. Biological treatment facilities – together comprising what has become known as the “Biosphere” – were commissioned in 2017, improving efficiency in wastewater treatment, which now stands at 99.9 percent, and making this initiative the most important project in Russia’s Year of Ecology.
