The group of Messoyakha fields includes the East Messoyakha and West Messoyakha areas. The licenses to both areas belong to CJSC Messoyakhaneftegaz, which Gazprom Neft and TNK-BP control on an equal basis. Gazprom Neft acts as the project operator.
The fields were discovered in the 1980s, and are the furthest north of Russia’s known oil fields on land. The Messoyakha group islocated onthe Gydan Peninsula, in Tazovsky District of Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, 340 kilometers north ofNovy Urengoy, inthe arctic climatic zone in aregion with undeveloped infrastructure.
At present, 57 exploration wells have been drilled atMessoyakha group offields with aspacing of 3-8 kilometers. Most of the reserves consist of heavy, high-viscosity oil.
