Gazprom Neft expands its use of “green seismic” technologies

Press-release Efficiency Safety

Gazprom Neft has completed its seismic operations for the 2017–2018 winter season, having covered 900 square kilometres at the Zapadno-Zimny and Zapadno-Pokursky blocks (Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug), and the Zapadno-Vorgensky block in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. In addition to this, a three-year seismic programme at the Otdalennaya group of fields (Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug) was completed ahead of schedule, including 1,270 square kilometres at this new asset.

“Green seismic” technology was used during operations at the Zapadno-Pokursky licence block, in the interests of protecting forested areas. In addition to reducing manmade environmental impacts, this new technology makes it possible to undertake high-quality investigations in areas with developed infrastructure that cannot be accessed by standard methods, through the use of a wireless data transmission system. A pilot project for “Green Seismic 2.0” technology — which requires practically no felling, thanks to the use of light drilling rigs and snowmobiles instead of large-scale machinery — was also undertaken in the same area.

Alexei Vashkevich, Director for Geological Exploration and Resource Base Development, Gazprom Neft, commented: “Seismic exploration is a key element in early-stage field development. The outcomes of seismic surveys are precisely what strategy for the subsequent development of new assets is based on. Our job is to implement this stage in the shortest possible time, with no loss in quality. By consistently improving the effectiveness of our geological prospecting solutions we are successfully meeting our objective of replenishing reserves and expanding the company’s resource base.”
