Gazprom Neft’s Moscow Refinery expands its production and shipment of environmentally friendly LPG fuels

Gazprom Neft’s Moscow Refinery has completed the modernisation of its gas distribution plant — a new facility allowing the production and shipment of LPG (propane and butane) by road and rail, as well as facilitating the production of mixed gases. The project is being implemented as part of the Moscow Refinery’s full-scale modernisation programme, under implementation by Gazprom Neft since 2011, total investment in which so far stands at RUB1.2 billion.

LPG storage facilities have also been modernised as part of the project, increasing the number of tanks, and their total capacity, to 3,200 m3. The upgraded gas distribution station has a total incoming and shipment capacity of 256,000 tonnes per year.

The gas distribution plant includes cutting-edge technology guaranteeing complete airtightness throughout the shipment process — thus avoiding any gas emissions into the atmosphere — thanks to a vapour-recovery system. New and efficient equipment, together with a high level of automation, has resulted in a two-fold increase in shipment speeds. The facility has also seen yet more improvements to its industrial safety, with each unit equipped with its own emergency shutdown system, and the entire station equipped with a modern automatic firefighting system.

Maxim Artemenko, Technical Director at Gazprom Neft’s Moscow Refinery, commented: “The modernisation of the gas distribution station means products can be shipped fast, and in an environmentally friendly way. Thanks to new equipment the plant can supply the market with various types of gases — propane, butane, isobutane, and a propane—butane mix. It’s important to note that all specifications on the gas distribution station take the future development of the plant into account. Future projects in modernising the Moscow Refinery will allow us to increase shipments of gases for public utility. We’re more than ready for this.”

Gazprom Neft is currently involved in a full-scale modernisation programme at its Omsk and Moscow refineries, involving cumulative investment of more than RUB550 billion. The first stage of this modernisation has involved the construction and reconstruction of key technological facilities, allowing the complete transition to the production of Euro-5 fuels, significantly improving energy efficiency and environmental friendliness in production. The implementation of the second phase of the modernisation programme is now ongoing, as a result of which refining depth and the production of light petroleum products will increase to match the highest international standards.
