Gazprom Neft has started preliminary work on the reconstruction of its G-43-107 catalytic cracking complex at the company’s Moscow Refinery. The project is being implemented as part of the second stage of the company’s thoroughgoing plant modernisation programme, expected to be completed by 2020. Reconstruction of the facility is intended to increase refining depth and the production of light petroleum products, as well as increasing production volumes, quality, and the environmental friendliness of goods produced.
Catalytic cracking is one of the most important processes in ensuing greater depth in oil refining. The catalytic cracking complex is one of a number of key processing units at the Moscow Refinery, processing vacuum distillate and producing components for the production of high-octane gasoline and olefin-rich gases.
The framework for reconstruction was drafted by French company Axens, with Russian design institute PMP is currently developing design and technical documentation. Reconstruction of the complex — which was first commissioned more than 30 years ago — will involve the modernisation of hydro-treatment facilities, catalytic cracking reactors, and cooling and heat-exchange systems, as well as the installation of new fractional distillation equipment.
This thoroughgoing reconstruction of the facility will allow capacity to increase by 20 percent, to 2.4 million tonnes of crude per year. Production of catalytically cracked gasoline is growing at more than 250,000 tonnes per year, and, moreover, the octane number (measuring fuel performance, or ‘anti-knock properties’) up by 0.8. Reducing the sulphur content in gasoline and hydro-treated vacuum gas oil will deliver a significant ecological benefit as a result of the reconstruction of the facility. Work to increase production capacity will be conducted throughout 2016, with reconstruction completed in 2018.
Arkady Egizaryan, CEO of the Gazprom Neft Moscow Oil Refinery commented: “The catalytic-cracking-facility reconstruction project is one of the most significant at the Moscow Refinery. Its success will have a direct impact on production volumes of high-quality gasoline, and the plant’s operational efficiency as a whole. Reconstructing the facility will allow us to increase production volumes of AI-92 gasoline by more than 10 percent and of Euro-5-standard AI-95 gasoline by almost four percent. This project will also allow us to address various strategic issues as part of the second stage of the plant’s modernisation: thanks to this reconstruction, by 2017 production volumes of light petroleum products at the Moscow Refinery will have increased by 2.4 percent, and refining depth by 1.6 percent. As well as productivity gains, we will also achieve better safety and operational reliability in the use of highly technical and complex equipment, will significantly increase the level of automation in technological processes, and will improve the energy efficiency of the facility.”
The Gazprom Neft Moscow Refinery is currently undergoing the most extensive and thoroughgoing modernisation in its history. Expected to run until 2020, the programme is directed at meeting European standards in production and environmental safety. The planned replacement of outdated machinery and the installation of modern production facilities is now ongoing. This will allow the production of cutting-edge products, meeting current ecological standards and, moreover, minimising (and allowing full control over) environmental impacts.
