Gazprom Neft implements new technologies in horizontal well construction

Gazprom Neft subsidiary Gazpromneft-Khantos has brought its first high-tech two-string wells into operation, making it possible to cut the drilling cycle by half, as well as to improve efficiency in bringing hard-to-recover hydrocarbon reserves in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug-Yugra (KhMAO) into production.

The first two-string wells have been built by Gazpromneft-Khantos at the Yuzhny license block at the Priobskoye field, in areas of variable reservoir pressure, and are being used in developing hard-to-recover hydrocarbon deposits. These challenging geological conditions notwithstanding, this new approach is, already, delivering greater drilling efficiency and significantly reducing production costs.

This method allows drilling times to be reduced from 38 to 19 days. Its unique construction means the well can be drilled deeper from under the conductor pipe, using a drill bit of the same kind and size, while also running an integrated production string in the borehole concurrently with the production tailpipe. Added to which, additional work is not required in assembling and running in the protective casing string.

This is a universal technology and — once a number of structural and organisational solutions have been optimised — can be rolled out at other Gazprom Neft assets, including in other regions (with different geological features) in which the company operates.

This new two-string horizontal well construction technology has been developed by the Gazprom Neft Science and Technology Centre together with Gazpromneft-Khantos. Cutting-edge Russian technologies, equipment and operations are being used in drilling operations, including drilling mud using Gazpromneft Drilline 3*, a specialist oil produced by Gazpromneft-Lubricants to its own bespoke formulation.

Alexei Kan, CEO, Gazpromneft-Khantos, commented: “The proportion of high-tech wells allowing hard-to-recover hydrocarbon reserves to be brought into production at Gazpromneft-Khantos’ fields is increasing every year. Almost 200 wells were commissioned at company facilities last year, more than 85 percent of which were horizontal wells. This cutting-edge approach to drilling and well finishing is a vital tool in improving efficiency at both mature and newly commissioned assets.”

* Gazpromneft Drilline is a range of lubricants used in the production of drilling fluids, developed and launched by Gazpromneft-Lubricants, operator of the Gazprom Neft lubricants business. This initiative has been implemented as part of Gazprom Neft’s import-substitution programme, enabling the company to almost completely avoid the use of imported base oils, reducing costs by 30 percent. This specialist lubricant is the main component in drilling fluids typically used in the construction of high-tech wells under challenging geological conditions. Hydrocarbon-based drilling muds typically comprise 70—90-percent base oils.
