Gazprom Neft lubricants to be tested during the Saudi Arabia Dakar Rally

Gazpromneft-Lubricants, operator of the Gazprom Neft lubricants business, will, for the sixth time, be supporting participants in the legendary Dakar marathon rally as technical partner. The company will be providing G-Energy transmission and service fluids to the MAZ-SPORTavto and G-Energy teams, as well as offering appropriate technical support in the selection of and diagnostics for lubricants throughout the rally-raid.

G-Energy premium lubricants are designed to ensure optimum engine protection against deposit accumulations and general wear, maintaining performance even under maximum loads. Formulations accommodate the requirements of the leading European, American and Japanese car makers, and are tested under real-world extreme conditions. Gazpromneft-Lubricants produces about 50 branded G-Energy lubricants for gasoline and diesel engines, including a specialist 100-percent synthetic product line, G-Energy Racing, developed for professional racing and sports cars.

Teams will be supported by a mobile laboratory throughout the race, specialists attached to which will check the performance of lubricants on “combat” vehicle components at the end of each special-stage of the rally. Lubricant samples will be taken and tested against more than 20 metrics at bivouac service-stops throughout the rally, with research results subsequently used in developing and producing new lubricant formulations.

In addition to this, the equipment carried by the mobile laboratory fleet — including a viscometer, and infrared and X-ray fluorescence spectrometers — will allow express in-field sports-car engine and transmission diagnostics to be undertaken, with specialists able to determine the condition of car components and assemblies from changes in the physical and chemical metrics of lubricants used throughout the race. This approach will help reduce the likelihood of unplanned repairs during the rally’s special-stages, and allow mechanics’ work for subsequent stages to be planned in advance.

“Direct collaboration with the leading automotive equipment manufacturers, and involvement in the most challenging international competitions, means we can get direct feedback from drivers, mechanics and engineers, in real time. We take the data we receive into account in developing new engine, transmission and gear-box oils. Thanks to that analysis, we were the first in Russia to launch specialist products for motorsport and heavy-goods vehicles, with consistent proven effectiveness under extreme conditions”.
