Gazprom Neft’s Board of Directors considers prospects for developing the company’s bitumens business

Press-release Efficiency

Gazprom Neft’s Board of Directors has reviewed the results of operations in its bitumens business, and prospects for further development. Gazpromneft Bitumen Materials, operator of the company’s activities in this area, is now the market leader in Russian bitumens, with the company’s 2018 year-end results placing it among the world’s top-10 producers, selling more than 2.5 million tonnes of bitumen materials.

Gazprom Neft began proactively developing its bitumens business in 2007. Operating in its specialist target market has involved the company developing an effective business, producing and selling cutting-edge high-tech products, which now includes bitumen production facilities at its Moscow, Omsk and Yaroslavl refineries and its Ryazan bitumens plant, as well as businesses producing innovative products and polymer—bitumen binders in Moscow and Vyazma. Gazprom Neft’s bitumens product range has increased from eight product lines in 2007 to 189 in 2019, with total output of the company’s bitumens products seeing a five-fold increase during that time. Gazprom Neft’s bitumen products are now supplied in 85 of Russia’s regions. The company is Russia’s leading supplier of modified binders, selling 202,000 tonnes of this product in 2018. Gazprom Neft’s international bitumens delivery network covers more than 50 countries, worldwide.

Gazprom Neft was the first oil company in Russia to open its own inter-disciplinary science and technology centre (the Gazprom Neft Bitumen Materials Science and Research Centre) in 2016, which has since become a key facility forming part of an effective system for developing new products for current and future road, airfield and industrial and civil construction. The company is now able to provide extensive scientific and technical support for full-cycle roadbuilding, from developing individually formulated bitumen materials and asphalt mixes adapted to the specific climate and usage conditions of the region in which they are to be used, to evaluating the effectiveness and functionality of road covering components.

Gazpromneft Bitumen Materials has been developing its own terminals network since 2018, expanding its geographic coverage of core target markets, with the first asset in this network being a high-tech production and logistics terminal in Salsk, Rostov Oblast.

The Gazprom Neft Board of Directors also reviewed its long-term strategy for developing the company’s bitumens business, with key strategic objectives under consideration including developing a highly competitive service portfolio, expanding the company’s geographic coverage in terms of production and logistics, and developing a product line in innovative bitumens, together with a portfolio of technical solutions.
