Gazpromneft-Khantos improves efficiency in oil production in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug

Gazprom Neft subsidiary Gazpromneft-Khantos has, for the first time, undertaken high-tech fracking using a polyacrylamide-based mixture — this new approach increasing individual well production by up to 20 percent.

Polymer-based fracking was used at the Yuzhno-Priobskoye field in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, with polyacrylamide** being used as an alternative to the guar-based fluid traditionally used.*** Injected into the well, the mixture prevents the fissures formed in the strata under fracking from closing up.

Using a synthetic polymer makes it possible to create a predictable fissure system, increasing depth by 15 percent as well as increasing reservoir coverage and oil inflow. Using polyacrylamide does not incur any additional costs, while the mixture’s unique properties, moreover, increase production of liquid hydrocarbons under fracking by up to 20 percent per well.

Gazpromneft-Khantos plans to increase its use of polyacrylamide in fracking, in the future, and to roll-out its successful experience in using it at its remaining fields in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug.

«The company faces a serious challenge in making sure non-traditional, hard-to-recover reserves are developed profitably. The main driver behind efficient oil production at low-permeability reservoirs is high-tech fracking — something we are constantly improving.»

Gazpromneft-Khantos LLC was founded in 2005 and is one of Gazprom Neft’s key E&P enterprises. The company is engaged in exploration and production at fields throughout the Khanty Mansiysk Autonomous Region and the Tomsk Oblast, including the Yuzhno-Priobskoye, the Zimnee, Yuzhnoye, Orekhovo-Ermakovskoye, Maloyuganskoye, Alexander Zhagrin and Yuzhno-Kinyaminskoye, and Maloyuganskoye fields.

The introduction of new types of materials is directed at improving efficiency in hydrocarbon production in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug. This new approach has been tested at the Yuzhno-Priobskoye field, Gazprom Neft-Khantos’ largest asset, accounting for more than 80 percent of the company’s total annual production, despite this block being impacted by a complex geological structure and low permeability.

* Hydraulic fracturing (fracking) is one of the most effective ways of increasing oil production at an asset and increasing the oil recovery factor (ORF), through the high-pressure injection of a mixture of fluids and a special proppant agent into oil-bearing strata, at a depth of several kilometres. This operation creates fissures in the rock, allowing oil to flow into the well. The longer these fissure are, the larger the reservoir area they cover, meaning more hydrocarbons can be produced.

** Polyacrylamide is the general name given to a group of polymers and copolymers based on acrylamide and its derivatives.

*** Guar gum is a thickener of natural origin, traditionally used in producing gels for hydraulic fracturing. It is made from the seeds of the leguminous guar plant.
