The third annual Gazprom Neft Cup Ice Hockey Tournament among children’s teams was held in Salekhard. Six teams formed of players born in 1998-1999 took part in the competition held from October 2 to October 4: Omsk Avangard, Tyumen Gazovik, Serebryanye Lvy (the Silver Lions) from St. Petersburg, Yugra-Neftyanik from Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Region, as well as Yamal-98 and Yamal-99 from Salekhard.
Playing for the veterans’ USSR Hockey Legends Club, Alexander Yakushev, Alexander and Vladimir Golikovs, Ilya Byakin, Igor Mishukov (wingers); Yuriy Lyapkin, Sergey Gimaev, Yuriy Shatalov (defense) and Sergey Mylnikov (goalkeeper) became special guests of the tournament. At the opening, the legendary stickmen played a friendly match with Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Region expansion team and top players of the children’s teams. Besides, the Soviet ice hockey stars conducted master classes for young sportsmen and held a meeting with Salekhard schoolchildren.
The final game of the tournament became one of the most spectacular matches. Both the Silver Lions and Avangard showed equal fight up to the last minute of the match, and the winner could only be decided by a series of shoot-outs. The victory was gained by St. Petersburg Silver Lions, Omsk Avangard came off second-best, and Yamal-98 from Salekhard came in a good third.
Gazprom Neft Cup Ice Hockey Tournament was concluded with a picturesque ice show with participation of such figure skating stars as Olympic Champions Tatyana Navka and Roman Kostomarov, medal winners of the world and European championships Margarita Drobyazko and Povilas Vanagas, and three time world champions among professionals Elena Leonova and Andrey Khvalko.
